Orange Glou Fair

About

Orange Glou Fair is a wine fair dedicated to Orange Wines, created by Doreen Winkler. She has worked as a Sommelier all over the world and is the Founder of Orange Glou. She is continually educating herself on natural wine, from new winemaking techniques and aging vessels to new producers arriving in the U.S. She also works harvest as often as possible, having previously assisted at Lucy Margaux (Adelaide Hills, Australia), Domaine du Comte Liger Belair (Burgundy, France), Yetti and the Kokonut (Barossa Valley, Australia), Folias de Baco (Douro, Portugal), Partida Creus (Catalonia, Spain) and more. In addition, she travels to wine regions all over the world. She attends natural wine fairs such as La Dive Bouteille, Les Pénitentes, La Salon des Vins de Loire in Loire Valley, France, Brunmaire in San Francisco, RAW in New York and many others in search of the best natural wines. Throughout her learnings and work with orange wine, she has come to appreciate its variety and versatility and has been on a mission to share the world of high quality orange wine with others through her store, subscription service, and the many restaurant wine lists she curated as a sommelier in NYC. As part of that mission, she dreamt of hosting a highly selective Orange Wine Fair and eventually just went for it last year.  Given the success of the first fair, it has become an annual event.

Wine Criteria

We apply a strict set of criteria to bring you the best natural wines in the world:

#1

Grapes are grown by small-scale, independent producers

#2

Grapes are hand-picked and only from organic or biodynamic vineyards

#3

Wine is fermented with indigenous yeast

#4

No additives or new oak aging

#5

Under 20 mg per liter or no sulfites are added

#6

Wines are unfiltered and unfined

All the wines we will taste for this event are orange wines, also known as amber or skin contact wines. Orange wine is made from white grapes that macerate on the skins; this can be done for a couple of hours or up to one year.Orange wine was invented in the Republic of Georgia 8000 years ago and brought to the rest of the world by 2 Italian winemakers Josko Gravner and Stanko Radikon who wanted to explore this wine making style about 40 years ago. Today there are around a couple thousand wine producers/wineries that make some orange wine along with other styles they are producing. Participating wineries are hand-selected and by invite only. Wineries are presented by the makers themselves.
